Data Governance Expert

Hartwig Medical Foundation (Hartwig) is looking for a Data Governance Expert — a senior legal professional who ensures that our handling of personal health data is not only compliant with legislation, but also ethically sound and operationally secure. In this role, you will safeguard and support both of Hartwig’s core activities: the delivery of high-quality diagnostics for cancer patients, and the responsible re-use of health data for research purposes. By enabling secure and privacy-conscious data sharing, you contribute directly to building a learning healthcare system — one in which insights from today’s patients improve care for tomorrow’s patients.
Your role as a Data Governance Expert
As Data Governance Expert, you will use your deep knowledge and expertise in privacy law and data governance to interpret complex legal frameworks, advise internal teams, coordinate with national and international partners, and help shape policies that allow Hartwig to remain a trusted leader in health data. The Data Governance Expert is part of the Database Team, provides independent internal advice, coordinates collaboration and agreements with important partners and helps shape and implement data-related policies and processes. In this role you will have the opportunity to help steer real change in cancer research and care.
Your Contribution
1. Data governance
- Monitor and interpret (inter)national legal developments on health data privacy & governance.
- Translate complex legal frameworks into practical data processing & privacy security procedures and data governance documentation and keep this up to date, including policies, registers, DPIA’s and DTIA’s.
- Identify and mitigate legal and ethical risks in data use.
- Responsible for operational excellence of data re-use for research by third parties.
- Perform and supervise legal analysis and assessment of data access requests, contracts, and projects which cover processing of personal data.
2. Collaboration and advisory role
- Responsible for legal aspects in collaborative projects and/or studies where health data collection is one of the key aspects, including alignment of legal procedures with external partners nationally and internationally.
- Represent the organization in expert-level data governance networks.
- Support harmonization of consent and legal documents with partners.
- Advise leadership and teams on privacy and governance updates and issues.
3. Operational and strategic support
- Develop and execute (legal) strategy on (inter)national level to enable data sharing and collaboration for research.
- Improve data access workflows (e.g., turnaround time, compliance assurance).
- Contact person for potential data leaks, both internally and externally, including analysis of data breaches.
- Provide internal training on data governance topics.
What You Bring
- Master’s degree in Law.
- 5–8 years of relevant experience, preferably in data protection, privacy law, or research data governance.
- Deep and up-to-date knowledge of GDPR and related (inter)national privacy laws.
- Strong analytical skills; able to provide clear and practical legal advice on complex questions.
- Works independently and takes initiative to improve processes and policies.
- Ability to get things done, drive projects from initial idea to final solution.
- Communicates clearly and confidently with both legal and non-legal professionals.
- Excellent command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written.
- Politically aware and able to navigate complex stakeholder environments.
- Detail-oriented, and pragmatic.
- Affinity with health data, or innovation in healthcare.
Prior knowledge of genomics or oncology is not required. However, a strong interest in healthcare innovation and data-driven research is expected.
