Legal Counsel
(Amsterdam – 32-40 uur)
Do you want to contribute to the mission of Hartwig Medical Foundation to improve care for patients with cancer?
At Hartwig Medical Foundation (Hartwig), we work closely with hospitals, research institutes and technology partners across the Netherlands and internationally. Our collaborations are built around patient data, innovation and regulatory compliance—three elements that are inseparable in advancing precision oncology.
As Legal Counsel, you will help ensure that these collaborations are legally sound, practical and future-proof. You will play a key role in enabling Hartwig to grow in a scalable and compliant way within the complex intersection of healthcare, data and technology.
You will join a small, collaborative legal team with a broad scope of responsibilities, including commercial contracting, corporate governance, regulatory compliance and data law. You will advise colleagues across the organisation, support strategic partnerships and innovation projects, and coordinate external legal counsel where appropriate. This is an opportunity to make a tangible impact in a mission-driven organisation where legal decisions directly contribute to better outcomes for patients with cancer.
Your responsibilities
- Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements with national and international partners, including diagnostic services agreements, SaaS agreements, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), collaboration agreements, procurement contracts and data sharing agreements.
- Develop, implement and maintain contract templates, model clauses and legal standards that support scalability and operational efficiency.
- Advise business units and cross-functional teams on legal matters relating to compliance, strategic partnerships and research & development projects.

- Draft, update and maintain internal policies, legal procedures, registers and quality standards.
- Coordinate and manage external legal advisors where specialised expertise is required.
- Support governance and compliance activities in an international environment and proactively identify and mitigate legal risks.
About you
- Approximately 4–6 years of relevant experience as a lawyer in private practice or as an in-house Legal Counsel.
- Solid experience in commercial contract law and supporting business collaborations, preferably within a technology-driven environment.
- Experience advising on compliance matters and translating legislation into practical business guidance.
- Experience with IT, software and/or SaaS agreements is a strong advantage.
- Knowledge of, or affinity with, the GDPR, the EU AI Act and the legal protection of health data is highly desirable.
- Excellent command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and excellent drafting and negotiation abilities.
- Able to translate complex legal issues into pragmatic, business-oriented advice.
- Proactive, pragmatic and results-driven, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-growing, innovative organisation.
- Comfortable working independently while actively collaborating with colleagues in a mission-driven environment.
What we offer
