DR-537 Variation in the 5S ribosomal RNA gene array and its relationship to TP53 status across metastatic cancers
Every cell builds ribosomes, the machines that make proteins. One small ribosomal component, 5S RNA, is encoded by many near-identical gene copies and is biochemically linked, through MDM2, to the p53 tumour-suppressor pathway. We study how variation in these 5S genes relates to p53 in cancer. Using whole-genome sequencing of metastatic tumours and each patient’s matched normal tissue, together with clinical annotation, we will compare tumours with normal versus altered p53. The project aims to clarify the link between 5S RNA genes, the p53/MDM2 system and cancer. No individual will be re-identified.
