DR-530 Uncovering the effects of genetic background on tumorigenesis through studying mutagenesis and selection
Cancer develops when DNA accumulates mutations over time, with inherited genetic factors influencing whether, when, and how aggressively it progresses. Little is known about the earliest stages of tumor formation as a function of genetic background. Using whole-genome sequencing data from the Hartwig Medical Foundation, we will study how inherited variation shapes DNA copying and repair, early cancer-driving changes, and tumor evolution under treatment. This will establish a rigorous baseline for understanding how genetic background affects cancer risk and outcomes, with findings shared openly with the research community.
